Actually, I am no longer waiting for the bus, as the Google maps application for android allows me to quickly find the shortest and most efficient public transport route. In days gone by, I would have have rented a car or taken a taxi when traveling. The Google mapplication takes the guess work out of when the bus is scheduled to arrive, it's route and it's estimated time of arrival. With this at my fingertips, I can judge when I have to be at the bus stop, so I don't have to waste time waiting for the bus. Granted, I may have a block or two more of walking, it may take a bit longer and I may have to plan a bit more than alternative modes of transport. But, the cost savings are amazing (10% of the cost of a taxi today). Plus, I get the opportunity to write silly posts like this one use my G1 phone while commuting on the bus. And as a nod to my green friends, this has to be a little more efficient than car.
IEEE ComSoc SCV is fortunate enough to have two "alumni" speakers from Tellabs (Rehan Jalil) and Cisco (Jay Iyer) for our Jan 13th panel session. Our panel moderator will be ComSocSCV Technical Activities Director Sameer Herlekar. Since the speaker/panelist and moderator are from India (and I spend all my mornings with Indian people at the ICC in Milpitas) we are going to expand the panel session to also include the three participants views of mobile broadband in India. Of course, that will depend on the oft delayed auction for 3G/ BWA spectrum that is now scheduled to be held in early January. While there won't be any slides or presentation from the speakers on that topic, they will provide you with their perspective and outlook. Why is this subject important? Because India has been and will continue to be the largest market for cellphones. Intel thinks it will be a huge market for netbooks and net tops- low cost PCs with WiMAX built in. Cisco and others believe India will potentially be a very large 3G mobile broadband market. To highlight the importance of the mobile packet core- the topic for our Jan 13th panel session meeting- please refer to this [...]

Received a fascinating telemarketing call that I almost hung up on, but have been listening now for 30+ minutes. One of the only groups that can escape the do not call laws are the politicians. This call was from Tom Campbell, who is running for the governor of California. Instead of a recorded call, this brought me into a live, interactive chat room. Inside this chat room there were upwards of 22,000 listeners. It truly was interactive, as it seemed like Campbell gave his callers at least 50% of the airtime. By pressing *3, anyone could join in with a question (there were call screeners). There was even interactive polling with the audience. According to the moderator, the top concerns of the listeners on the call were 41% – the budget 33% – the economy 13% – the health care 7% – water 6% – education What makes this fascinating is that it was so simple and sort of a back to future experience, as my phone proved to be a great tool for holding a one-to-many conversation; a computer wasn’t required; software plug-ins were not necessary and I could walk around with my speaker phone annoying the rest of [...]

Introduction: With all the recent announcements, we wonder what kind of a company Cisco has evolved into? They seem to want to provide a solution to every conceivable IT market segment. This morning I heard a KCBS radio commercial about Cisco delivering movies over a private network in a dentist’s office. Later today, I read in the NY Times that Cisco and EMC have formed a joint venture to pursue the data center market for large business (see text below). This afternoon, I attended a Telecom Council session where Cisco Sr VP Kelly Ahuja talked about the explosive growth the company expects from the mobile Internet. Their big play in this area has to be the acquisition of Starent Networks for $3B- a prominent wireless packet core vendor. For more on the Starent acquistion see: http://wimax.com/commentary/blog/blog-2009/october-2009/cisco-enters-market-for-ip-based-mobile-infrastructure-via-acquisition-of-starent-networks-1014 Assessment: For sure, Cisco is drifting far away from their flagship multi-protocol/IP routing and Ethernet switching roots. Last week they acquired an Internet security firm. It appears Cisco is transforming itself into an amalgamation of many different companies. They want to be an Internet software company (Web Wx, Internet security), consumer electronics company for the connected home, cable and satellite TV set top box provider, video conferencing for business. It’s hard [...]

It is hard to believe that it was eight years ago that the brave souls on flight 93 sacrificed their own lives to save the lives of countless others. There are many web sites dedicated to the tragedy of 9/11, but this particular site, www.honorflight93.org, touched me. Maybe it is because my friends involved with OPASTCO and FRED raised $59k to donate to the Shanksville, PA volunteer fire department less than 6 months after 9/11. Maybe it is because every time I jet around on an airplane across this great land, at least once during the flight, I will think about the horrifying experience for the people on flight 93. Whatever the reason, we will all remember. Video Innovation in Iowa Iowa Independent Telcos have always been at the forefront of adding video and other services to their broadband offerings. It is appropriate then, that the Iowa Telecom Association would produce one of the best one-day programs on the topic of video. Topics ranged from over the top video, to local content to Emergency Alert Services at their event last week in Des Moines. Brian Collins of Sky Angel explained how their family and Christian oriented service shifted from a satellite to a broadband, over-the-top solution. He explained that their target market represents less than 5% of households, but that the buy-rates are up to three movies per month for the on-demand content. I spoke of the philosophy of over the top, as it relates to independent telcos and couldn’t stay away from my favorite topic, local content. John Kuykendall of JSI gave an excellent presentation on local content. He summarized different techniques telcos are using to create local content. One of the things he pointed out is the importance of using the web and television to reinforce local content efforts. Janelle Hansen of Marne & Elk Horn Telephone showed an excellent reel of local content examples she compiled from various telcos [...]

We have written extensively about this topic which has become somewhat of a suspense drama. Despite the enormous potential, the disappointments keep coming. Here is the latest: BSNL halts renewed WiMAX tender India owned telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has again deferred its plans to issue a tender for potential WiMAX franchisees, according to the Hindu Business Line. Having been forced to abandon its initial tender after it was revealed that five of the six bidders shortlisted existed only on paper, BSNL delayed its target date for relaunching the tender to 24 June 2009. It is now understood that the date has been postponed indefinitely. BSNL has said it will reveal a new target date ‘soon’, but it first intends to settle the terms and conditions under which potential partners will operate in a bid to streamline the tender process and avoid confusion. One area that BSNL has clarified is that franchisees will not have to pay a one-time upfront fee; it is expected instead that operators rolling out WiMAX services using BSNL’s spectrum will over a period of time pay towards BSNL’s costs incurred in acquiring the frequencies. When it does finally launch the tender, BSNL will invite [...]

The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), whose primary membership is network equipment vendors, has just released its annual report and outlook for the global telecommunications industry. For the first time in its 23 years of forecasting, TIA predicts a 3.1 % loss for the global ICT Industry in 2009. Further, they anticipate a 5.5 % decline for 2009 US ICT revenue. Much of this loss may be attributed to a 27 % fall in the U.S. broadband equipment market. TIA’s negative outlook is significant, because its report has always been a flag waving signal of hope for the telecom industry- even in years like 2002 and 2003, when there wasn’t much to cheer about. TIA’s annual global forecast report usually manages to find a silver lining somewhere in the world that shows an upward growth trajectory. TIA is optimistic about mobile data services (especially when compared to equipment sales). They think that some growth lies ahead, but not really until 2011. Global telecom revenue is predicted to grow 1.2 percent in 2010, 6.4 percent in 2011 and 7.9 percent in 2012. "Broadband will be a driver for recovery in all areas, from healthcare IT to smart grid technology, public safety networks to education, as well as for businesses and [...]
