John Messmer had a passion for engineering. A Cal Tech graduate and someone 13 years my senior, I looked up to John. Messmer was never interested in money or material things. His passions were books and electronic device design. His seemingly contradictory anti-establishment and conservative viewpoints definitely provided me with a more nuanced view of the world than the black and white world I often saw in high school. John was never satisfied with his own work and always felt he could do better. This probably ate at him, as his intelligence allowed him to see imperfections that others couldn’t see. This quality helped him produce quality work, but probably made it difficult for him to be satisfied with his accomplishments. His design accomplishments are mostly history these days, thanks to ever decreasing life cycles of electronic equipment. The memories of these devices, such as the Tomco ADS1000, Automatic Non-Duplication Switcher or the PT 3000 Programmable Event Timer, are fading even for those of us who had a small hand in their creation or production. No, John’s real legacy was the people he touched, whether consciously or not. John could be surly and I remember being quite nervous when he [...]

It was a bittersweet moment last week when I read of Frank Genochio’s passing. Frank was a prince of a man and provided a great example of how to lead an honorable life. A World War II veteran and member of the greatest generation, he never boasted about his successes but quietly helped others in achieve their potential through encouragement and sage advice. As a soldier in the early days of Silicon Valley, Genochio led Catel, which, in the 1970s was one of the top manufacturers of cable television headend equipment. Under his stewardship, Catel pioneered new technologies and services, including the use of Frequency Modulation for transmitting video signals. As important as work and the people he worked with were to him, Frank’s family and his faith were the center of his life. I remember his daily walks to fight a heart condition and I can’t help but think that a big part of his motivation for his exercise regimen was to remain healthy for his family. Frank was preceded in death by his wife Pat. Acelebration of his life will be held at 1 PM on December 27th at the St. Andrews Catholic Cemetery in San Andreas. To [...]

Stacey Brooks of Film Specific interviews Brian Stevenson, a long-time friend and long-time veteran of content licensing, discusses the challenges for an independent producer in getting distribution in various on-demand and pay television platforms. He provides good insight into pricing and the type of revenue a filmmaker can earn and how they can go about selling their product to studios and pay television outlets. He stresses the importance of marketing to gain exposure and credibility with the studios. Promotional and marketing ideas that Stevenson suggests include submissions to film festivals, theatrical release and having name stars, even if they are B-stars. Click here to listen to the post. Related Articles:05/14/08 “You must respect the past if you are going to ...The Virtual Living Room Although the title of iHollywood’s conference this week was, the ...Roger Bindl Roger Bindl is an award winning videographer, producer, editor ...Possibilities of a Comcast Theme Park So, when the Comcast-NBC-Universal merger goes through, how will it ...Show Me: Marketing With Video on the Internet – The Viodi Book Review “Before long, video on a website will be an expectation, ...Powered by Contextual Related Posts

After 7+ years of going it alone, I have taken full plunge back into the Silicon Valley start-up culture by joining a company that is in stealth mode. Over time, I will be able to reveal more details. It is in the broadband television space, but its model is so unique that it really is creating a new space in the world of television. One of the things that attracted me to this company was that they saw the value in the Viodi View and ViodiTV in helping to inform, connect and, hopefully, occasionally entertain the independent telco industry concerning the topic of video services. Thanks to the foundation this company brings, our plan is to enhance our coverage of industry events and provide increased value to the telco trade associations and their members. This relationship should give us a new channel for distributing the Viodi View and ViodiTV. The plan is to continue as well as expand the coverage of independent telco tradeshows. Editorial control will still be by the individual authors. Our posts will still be a function of what we feel like writing at any given time and will cover what we think is relevant to independent [...]

I have always appreciated Alan Weissberger’s ability to analyze and write about complex technical challenges. He is never afraid to take a strong view on a topic. A former FCC Commissioner commented on one of his articles by stating, “Your articles were right on target and I very much enjoyed them.” Further, Weissberger is quoted in the 3/28 issue of the Online NewsHour by MacNeil/Lehrer Productions. "No one knows what the other players are going to do, because this spectrum doesn’t dictate what wireless technology you use," said Alan J. Weissberger, a Silicon Valley telecommunications consultant with DCT Advisors. Thank you Alan for your contributions to the Viodi View and congratulations.
