Next Sponsorship Opportunity with WSTA Fall Conference With school starting (in some cases having already started), summer feels like it is over. The tradition of Labor Day marking the end of summer has gone by the wayside in most places, with the school year being the mark against which I measure. August has become the new September and school's opening truncates vacation plans for those of us with school-age children. Fortunately, the conference circuit still adheres to a September launch with events that include, Set-Top 2010, the FTTH Council Convention and Expo, NTCA's Annual Convention and Screenplays’ Magazine Media and Innovation Summit. Transitioning to an IP Association One of the few telecommunications’ conferences held in the summer is OPASTCO’s Annual Convention. ViodiTV not only provided coverage at the event, we produced a video, sponsored by OmniTel Communications, highlighting OPASTCO’s transition to an IP Association. This video features leaders of OPASTCO discussing what this transition means for the association, as well as how IP and broadband are affecting their communities. Click here to view. Five 9's Reliability for Over the Top Services “The most valuable asset an independent telco has, other than their people, is their bandwidth,” said Kevin Walsh of Zeugma Systems on a [...]

So, when the Comcast-NBC-Universal merger goes through, how will it affect the Universal Studios' theme parks? I don't think we will see a ride based on the movie, The Cable Guy, given its subject matter and that it was a Columbia Pictures release. Maybe there will be new attractions dedicated to broadband. How about a ride that keys off the line, "To Xfinity and beyond"? Again, this phrase references another non-Universal movie, so we probably won't see that attraction. A ride based on the Slowskys is probably not thrilling enough for an amusement park. On second thought, maybe they could do something interesting, as they have built a clever web site around these broadband-challenged tortoises. Comcast even has an online store for hawking Slowsky-related merchandise. This is a great first step, as amusement parks are profit-making marketing engines. Fans pay admission for the privilege of shopping, seeing cross-promotional messages and spending most of their time in line. Another possible synergy between Comcast and the theme parks is data collection. Universal Studios and other major theme parks use fingerprint identification to identify season pass holders to ensure that people don't try to sneak into the park with someone else's season pass. I could see [...]

Mark Ellison of Patton Boggs LLP asks a very interesting question as to whether the future of broadband video is at stake in a post on the Law360 blog. He asks this question in the context of the Comcast-NBC merger and he points out that securing content for its broadband properties is, in the opinion of many analysts, a motivation for the acquisition. Ellison poses many interesting questions as to what this powerful combination of broadband and content could mean in for competition. Click here to find his article (must be a Law360 subscriber). Thanks to Ellison for sending the Viodi View a link to the Comcast/GE economic study of the merger (this was a recent submission to the FCC) and its impact on the online video marketplace. A key assumption in this study is that online video is a complement to Comcast’s traditional form of video distribution. Regardless, it suggests that even if there is a shift and the online video services become a competitor, Comcast will still win by offering a robust broadband offering. It also suggests that the overall company would lose more by restricting access to online programming than it would gain, since it only covers 23.8% of [...]

Background: Femtocells are low power 3G/4G cellular base stations which can be thought of as wireless Access Points (AP’s). Instead of a WiFi Access Point we’re all familiar with, a femtocell could be a UMTS, CDMA/EVDO, LTE, or Mobile WiMAX Access Point, depending on the underlying mobile network technology. The bi-directional voice and data traffic is taken off the respective wireless network and placed on the Broadband Internet connection at the home or office. Femtocell suppliers claim they’ll be capable of communicating at 3G (HSDPA) and 4G (LTE, mobile WiMAX) speeds, depending on the bandwidth of the broadband Internet connection (which could be a bottleneck). Femtocells will provide mobile handset and notebook PC coverage in a home or business with typically 2- 4 simultaneously active users. Picocells are larger APs designed for enterprise use, with higher output power, to handle more simultaneous users. No changes are required to the handset, notebook PC, or other mobile devices, [the SIM card in a mobile device might be programmed to authenticate the user]. The residential and enterprise femtocell markets have very different requirements and operators will likely target one of those market segments. Some carriers see the need for enterprise femtocells creating a bigger market opportunity than [...]

Google’s fourth quarter results were hurt by write downs related to investments in AOL and Clearwire. The Internet search leader also said it remained confident about the progress of its Android platform for mobile handsets. Google reported a net income of $382 million, down 68 percent from the $1.21 billion in the year-ago period, but that was primarily due to write downs of its investments in AOL and Clearwire by $726 million and $355 million, respectively. Google CEO Eric Schmidt stated, "Both deals (Clearwire and AOL) made sense to us then and make sense to us now, and continue to be a strategic part of our overall business philosophy," Google, along with Intel, Comcast, Time Warner, Brighthouse and others invested $3.2 billion in the new Clearwire. All of these Clearwire investors face huge losses. Intel recently took close to a $1B charge on its Clearwire investment (Intel’s profits were down 90% in the most recent quarter). Clearwire’s stock has dropped more than 70 percent since the deal was announced in May, resulting in a $950 million “impairment charge” for Intel. That comes less than a month after Intel Capital’s head honcho- Arvind Sodhani – stated he was excited, rather than [...]

Parks Associates Web Cast, Broadband Video to the TV and Beyond, is an excellent primer for anyone wanting to get the most out of the upcoming Digital Hollywood and TelcoTV conferences. It is not too late to listen, as Parks Associates has the recording online. Kurt Scherf, Vice President, Principal Analyst, combines extensive primary and secondary research together with excellent analysis to provide a clear picture of the current broadband video market. Scherf’s presentation provides an update on the broadband video space and the various players that are distributing online video content, how online video is being monetized and the rise of networked consumer electronics as a way of viewing broadband video. He splits the broadband video space into multiple categories, including: DVD+electronic delivery (e.g. NetFlix) Broadcaster initiatives (e.g. ABC, CBS, etc.) Internet Video Providers (e.g. Apple TV) Portals (e.g. Google) TV on the Web (e.g. Veoh) Broadband Service Providers (e.g. Verizon) Hardware and Content (e.g. TiVo) He makes the point that the combined revenue for theatrical box office, DVD sales and DVD rentals has been flat since 2004. As a result, all of the major content owners seen online video as a new revenue channel. Examples of the seriousness [...]

Having just analyzed recent reports from telecom companies, we conclude that the telecom recession/ depression continues. Revenues are falling way short of expectation, growth is limited to mobile data, and profits are minuscule with the exception of Verizon (VZ). But even at VZ, the growth seems to be coming almost entirely from new wireless data services for mobile subscribers, while customer installations for FiOS seems to be stalling (despite the huge build-out cost and heavy promotion). Perhaps the most important earnings report tidbit was that VZW (a joint venture between VZ and Vodafone-UK) said its churn rate — the pace at which customers defect to other carriers — fell to 1.1 percent from 1.2 percent in the previous quarter. By comparison, Sprint Nextel has a churn rate of 2.45 percent. Comment: With all the consolidation that has taken place in telco land- both in the network operator and equipment spaces- one would expect profit margins to be a lot higher, due to less competition and the power of scale. But they aren’t. The industry seemed to be a lot healthier in the late 1990s when competitive carriers were expanding their business to both enterprise and residential customers. But alas, they [...]
