Overview With the success of smart phones, tablet PCs and game players, video continues to be the dominant form of mobile data traffic on wireless networks. Cisco Systems predicts that mobile video will increase at a compound annual growth rate of 131% between 2009 and 2014. Yet we constantly hear and read user complaints about poor video quality, stalling/ freezing. Can mobile video traffic continue to climb while users are so dissatisfied with reception? The conundrum is that mobile video transported on 3G mobile networks cannot deliver the quality users desire, while the stand alone. broadcast mobile video networks are commercial failures with the new, standards based networks pushed off into the future. How long can this continue without mobile video traffic falling off a cliff? Meanwhile, broadcast mobile video networks have yet to be profitable. Qualcomm's FloTV (AKA MediaFLO) has been a huge disappointment and the company is considering shutting it down, according to the Wall Street Journal. Mobile-TV Push Gets Fuzzy Reception. And, the mobile DTV network that we thought would be up and running by now is nowhere near launch. The WSJ reports, "A group of U.S. local broadcasters, in fact, is just beginning to gear up an effort to deliver a broadcast service [...]

Seeing people smile at the camera is one of the most rewarding things about producing video content. Looking back on it years later, the combination of audio and video captures memories that print and photos alone cannot match. Editing the following video brought back fond recollections of past OPASTCO tradeshows and friends made at these events. Click here to watch a video montage that uses ViodiTV at OPASTCO footage to promote the OPASTCO 2010 Summer Convention. Thank you in advance to the following sponsors for their support of ViodiTV's coverage of the 2010 OPASTCO Summer convention. More than a Logoed Napkin by Roger Bindl Roger took a slightly different approach and produced a video that touts the long-tail benefits of video sponsorship versus the traditional tradeshow sponsorships that last as long as the tradeshow. He found some clips from the archives with industry figures that I forgot we had. Simplifying the Development of Apps for TV Since March 2009, the Yahoo!
Finally, after 3 years in draft mode, I decided to publish the following post. The recently drafted "Social Network Users' Bill of Rights" reminded me of my post written so long ago, except that it is obviously more well thought out than what I scratched out one morning. Of course, having a bunch of bright people using the latest in social media tools to draft their ideas is a big advantage in terms of coming up with a comprehensive approach to protecting user data. Whether companies should be compelled to follow these rules because of government edict or market forces is subject to debate. It does seem like there might be an opportunity for services to differentiate and create a more "trusted environment" by adhering to these guidelines. The question is whether enough people, at this point, care about how their data is managed for it to make a difference? Or, like one commentator says, will the homogenization eventually suppress innovation and, as a result, cause services that follow these guidelines to be left behind? So, here were the ideas I had come up with a couple of years ago. Although written with the video producer in mind and how an online [...]

All are great shows and I have some great take-aways from these events that are still stuck as digital scribbles across my virtual notepad. My epiphany is how much better my note taking is when I am traveling with my partner in crime, Roger Bindl. Read The Korner to see the trouble I got into a couple of weeks ago, when I didn’t have Roger to make sure I had a roof over my head. The Mayor of Broadband Population growth of 33% over a decade with only one city employee added to the payroll is one of the accomplishments cited by former Fort Wayne mayor, Graham Richard, in his keynote talk at the 2010 Broadband Properties Summit. Richard pointed out that cities face an $83 billion shortfall in the next couple of years and improving efficiency (doing more with the same number of employees) in government is going to be a critical way to make the proverbial ends meet. Click here to go to the video interview.
Introduction: This well attended panel session was more of an extended question and answer session, rather than new information or insights conveyed to the audience. Nonetheless, there were a few significant points made, which will be discussed later in this article. The event was organized by Draper Fisher Jurvetson and VLAB (MIT/Stanford) and took place on April 27th at Fenwick & West LLP in Mt View, CA. The panel moderator was David Price, Vice President of Business Development and Corporate Communications – Harmonic Inc. There were five panelists: Erick Hachenburg, CEO – Metacafe (an on-line video entertainment web site), David McIntosh, CEO – Redux (provides crowd sourcing of TV via a discovery mechanism), Margaret Stewart, Head of User Experience – YouTube (very popular division of Google), Michael Yang, Venture Partner – Comcast Interactive Capital (a VC that has invested $500M in 90 startups), Paul Wehrley, Co-founder and COO of Clicker (produces a program guide for interactive TV) Event Description: The way we consume video is inexorably changing.
At the Tampa Bay International Airport, WiFi access to the Internet is bundled with the price of your airline ticket; aka it is "free access". There is a price to "free", however, and, in this case, it is the blockage of video streaming and adult content sites. When attempting to access one of these sites (a video streaming site in my case), an error message appears (along with some sponsored links) as follows: "This domain is blocked. Access to blip.tv has been blocked for either content or bandwidth considerations. This restriction is necessary to ensure Free Internet access. This site was categorized in: Video Sharing, Adult Themes" [see this link for web page]. When I view the ViodiTV post that has the blip.tv video embedded, I still don't see the video, but at least I see the accompanying text. So, the two take-aways from this experience: Embedding video in a non-blocked site assures the viewer will at least be taken to the destination web site. Text is important as both a teaser to get someone to watch a video, as well as a substitute if the video is blocked. Related Articles:Contact Us Phone Numbers (tel) 408 676 6496 (CA) (fax) [...]

With the recent ratification of the A/153 ATSC Mobile DTV Standard, US broadcasters are able to deliver live video content to a broad variety of mobile devices. The standard is the culmination of a development process that took about two and a half years. The Mobile Video Coalition said that at least 70 stations would begin broadcasting using the standard. Several electronics makers, including Samsung, LG and Dell, have produced prototype devices. It is first likely to be available on netbook computers, according to a report in Broadcasting and Cable. According to the Coalition, the new standard will also allow for "emergency alerts that can be customized by market or location, live audio feeds, data-casting with traffic maps, closed captioning, ‘clip casting’ sports and news highlights that could be stored in memory on a device, ‘push’ video-on-demand for future viewing, time-shifted television, mobile digital video recording, interactive polling, electronic coupons, targeted advertising, [and] an electronic service guide for ease of tuning." Some observers now believe that mobile TV will really take off in 2010. Broadcast Engineering magazine asks if mobile TV screens will eventually surpass living room screens? The standard was devised for mobile phones, in part because watching TV on handsets has [...]

Look out Google and Microsoft Another Internet OS Is Here Microsoft and Google’s recent announcements regarding cloud computing triggered a recent memory of a video interview from with a company called ViaCube. ViaCube is a cloud computing solution that can be configured as sort of a hybrid solution, whereby a home appliance can be used as a local store of data. What impressed me about the ViaCube solution is the user interface that ties together various applications, such as word processing, photo editing and communications, into an easy-to-use interface. I have been a big fan and user of Google’s cloud computing initiatives and from what I saw, ViaCube’s interface was superior.
