The start of school used to be associated with September and Labor day was the demarcation between summer fun and the grindstone of endless schoolwork. Reflecting the 24/7 world of today, however, it stands to reason that school becomes more of a continuous experience; one not bound by season or the age of the student. In this issue of the Viodi View, we get a glimpse of a unique  telecom/educator partnership that is an interesting model for rural and urban areas.

“Building business from within,” is part the strategy that the Heart of Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce uses to attract and grow jobs within its region, so says Melissa Loken, president of the Heart of Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce. Like many successful economic development entities, the Heart of Wisconsin has a regional focus, as opposed to being focused on a single city. In this interview, Heart of Wisconsin president, Melissa Loken, suggests that,

“Rural broadband is just as important as it is in the city; it connects people and will be a key tool for economic development in the smaller communities.”

“With a single sensor we can work into the fitness, wellness and life-care arenas,” said Asher Gendelman of Zephyr Technology. This sensor, which, according to the Zephyr Technology website, “captures and transmits comprehensive physiological data including Heart Rate, Breathing Rate, Posture, Thoracic skin temperature, and activity level,” could be a key element for enabling a next generation PERS (Personal Emergency Response System); one that is about proactively finding issues, before the patient feels symptoms.

Olympusat Aims to Be YouTube for the Enterprise

Olympusat Holdings, a long time provider of video distribution for family, faith, speciality and Spanish-language cable networks, recently announced that it is expanding its focus to include the enterprise market via its Olympusat Telecom division. Through a number of high-profile partners including Kit Digital, Akamai, Level 3, Comcast Business Class, Century Link, Hibernia Media, Windstream, AT&T/ACC Business and Strangeloop Networks, Olympusat Telecom is providing a complete offering for any company that wants a video presence.

  • Too many announcements from IBC to keep up with, but one observation is that MPEG-DASH, which was still in discussion a year ago, is now ready. MPEG-DASH is a standards-based adaptive streaming protocol that supports multiple DRM systems via common encryption supporting live, VOD and time-shifting to IP-connected devices such as TVs, PCs, tablets, smartphones and set-top boxes.

  • The Digital Home Summit on September 27th and co-located with the FTTH Conference and Expo will provide practical information for broadband operators as to how they can leverage their strengths to help their customers create, as the conference organizer says, a home sweet digital home.
  • The Cloud Services Summit, co-located with TelcoTV, on October 26th in Las Vegas will answer the question if data centers are the central office of the future. Again, this should provide great insight for those operators that are looking at creating private clouds for their local businesses.
  • Watch this fast-paced preview of the Calix User’s Group. On Sunday, October 28th, Viodi will be leading a fun and important panel on local content at this event.

One of the panelists who will be joining us on our local content panel at the Calix User’s Group is Rhonda Dukart, marketing and public relations director of Consolidated Telcom. She will talk about what has made their local content program successful and how its impact on their community. Community is the common denominator for rural telecom providers like Consolidated Telcom.

In this video, Dukart discusses their grant program which helps the communities they serve by helping people stay current with technology.  This unique program, which leverages the power of the schools is a model for partnership between telecom providers, educators and communities to keep the citizenary digital literate; which is not an easy task given the rapid change of technology.
