So all of you who suggested I am the missing link after the last issue of the Viodi View, were half right. I apologize for my faulty linking in the last issue. To get the links straight, once and for all:

VoIP or VOD – Which Is the Killer Application?

Right now, my head is stuffed with information from NTCA’s 2004 ISP Summit. There were some great tips and insight from Independent Telcos that are Internet Service Providers. I should know, as I am listening to the sessions over and over again. This is because I am doing the post-production work on the CD-ROM for that conference as I write. Check out the sample at http://www.viodi.com/isp/.

This leads me to the next subject, which is local content. As mentioned in the last newsletter, local content will be one of the themes this year. In fact, in this month’s OPASTCO Roundtable magazine, there is an article penned by yours truly regarding independent telcos and the creation of local content. To get a sampling of this article, please click here. To read the complete article, you have to be a member of OPASTCO, http://www.opastco.org/.

Speaking of local content, Viodi is organizing a workshop to discuss what is required for an independent telco to participate in the creation of local content. In this workshop, we will share what we have learned from own experience, other producers and independent telcos regarding the creation and distribution of local content. The workshop text book, which is included, will be the Computer Videomaker Handbook (reviewed in the last issue of the Viodi View).

This workshop will be affordable and convenient thanks to the efforts of Paradyne and Cisco. Viodi will be joining them on a tour that they are leading that includes participation from Tut, Myrio and Widevine and will take us through 11 cities in a two month period. Information on the local content conference can be found at http://www.viodi.com/local/ and on the IP Video Services Seminar at http://www.telcovideo.org.

So, what does a grocery store, NAPTE and independent telephone companies have to do with each other? Well, I will let you know in the next issue. In the mean time, for some fun homework, take a look at this article in the San Jose Mercury News which explains how Trader Joes has been successful in the face of larger, nation-wide competitors.

Regarding NAPTE, I will be at their tradeshow learning about programming by the time this hits the streets, er.. Internet. I will give an update on that interesting conference in the next issue.

The Korner:

So, noticing how popular the photo of me with some of the stars of the new cable network, Reality Central, was, I figured I would try to repeat this click-through success by taking a photo with a few of the stars of Paradyne, Trish Bocutti, and Teresa Sperry. The cool thing about this photo is that it was snapped with Trish’s camera phone.

This photo serves a couple of purposes; 1) some shameless advertising for the upcoming Local Content Workshop and IP Video Services Seminar, 2) it proves to the tax authorities that I really was in Florida in December on business.
