Sharing a USTA booth to help promote NTCA CD-ROMs at an OPASTCO convention seemed might seem a little odd at first blush, but that is exactly what I was doing last week. I continue to be impressed with the staff of these organizations, as they realize that serving the telco community is their number one job. The reality is these three organizations are as important to the rollout of interactive television, as a $100 set-top box. Without their efforts, telcos’ would not have a voice in Washington and others’, with different agendas, would set the rules for the telcos.

These telco trade associations also do a great job of educating and informing their members of the latest in technology, marketing and regulatory changes. One of the ways they inform their constituency is through various tradeshow and conferences. With so many changes afoot, these educational opportunities are probably more important than ever. If I had the chance, I would go to every one of these events sponsored by these groups. Each conference provides a slightly different perspective on the technology and business issues facing telcos.

Needless to say then, I am very pleased to have the opportunity to work with USTA on their upcoming Telecom ’03 conference. Their conference features several keynote speakers of note, including FCC Chairman Michael Powell, William Daley, President of SBC and Brian Strom, President and CEO of SureWest Communications. The conference covers virtually any telecommunications related topic one would want to know.

Held from October 11th thru the 15th, the focus of Telecom ’03 is on the business opportunities in voice, video and data. As such, they have assembled not only their own agenda, but they have leveraged others, such as the Telecommunications Engineering Conference, J.D. Powers & Associates, Telestrategies and Viodi, LLC to host their conferences within Telecom ’03.

The breadth and depth of this conference agenda is such that there is something for everyone. Starting as low as $250 for USTA members, it is a great deal for anyone that not only wants to learn about content for entertainment and educational networks, but wants to stay informed of other telecommunications developments. Early-bird registration ends July 31st, so please click here for more information.
