For example, Jimmy Kimmel Live, ABC’s late night talk show, has taught me a thing or two. Last week, for instance, the star of the WB Network’s show Tarzan was a guest on the Kimmel show. This sparked the obvious realization that the entertainment industry has done a great job of what has sometimes been called coopetition.

That is, even though the networks are competing at one level, they sometimes promote each other for their mutual benefit. It is critical that the independent telcos and, especially, their suppliers embrace this same attitude as video and other broadband services become a standard feature of the telcos’ offering. So, the theme for this issue of the Viodi View is this so-called, coopetition.

Wireless Daze:

Over the past few weeks, my mind has gone wireless. I have been thinking, breathing and sleeping wireless. This is because I have been editing the 19 plus hours of audio and synchronizing it to the 30 presentations from NTCA’s 2003 IOC Wireless Symposium. NTCA will make this available as a CD-ROM. There were some very good presentations, including several topics that were entirely new to me, such as the latest developments with the 700 MHz band and the FCC’s efforts to create a secondary market for spectrum. To learn a little bit more about what I learned from this conference, please check out these links:

Banding Together at 700 MHz:

Marketing Fundamentals 101:

MovieBeam – Old News Already?

Ok, so MovieBeam is old news to regular readers of the Viodi View. A few weeks ago, there was a flurry of noise about Disney’s effort at completely bypassing the traditional infrastructure for the delivery of movies and other content. They have an interesting approach, especially if they can couple it with their foray into consumer electronics. To see what I mean, please click here.

Roger Bindl, a veteran telecom player and a name many of you should recognize, has put together a clever tutorial explaining the MovieBeam concept at http://www.hem.com/vod/vodtypes.html. He is doing some really interesting stuff with interactive video and scripted tutorials, as you will see on his site. Expect Viodi and Roger to be collaborating on various projects in the future.

VoIP and TeleInfoServices:

Yesterday’s San Jose Mercury News has an interesting opinion piece by Susan Kennedy, a member of the California Public Utilities Commission, regarding VoIP regulation. In a nutshell, she suggests in her article that state regulators should take a “hands-off” approach to this new technology. This, of course, has scary, long-term implications for Universal Service Funding (USF) and for those telcos relying on USF.

This is in line with the comments from David Irwin at Viodi’s Fall, Independent Telco Video Content Conference. Irwin, of Irwin, Campbell & Tannenwald, PC, suggested that Telcos have to prepare for the day when USF goes away. Further, he indicated that Telecom and Information Services are blurring into something that he believes should be called “TeleInfoServices”.

TeleInfoServices really is the concept of the Triple Play, Quadruple Play and Quintuple Play (I think the baseball metaphor needs to be replaced with something else) as the ultimate way for independent telcos to compete. That is, in one sense, TeleInfoServices might be considered the Whole Product, while the various elements, such as telephony, Internet, wireless and video could be considered must-have features. More insight from David and other speakers from the Viodi’s Fall, Independent Telco Video Content Conference will be included in the next issue of the Viodi View.

Triple Play TV Web Site Launches

Along the theme of industry coopetition, check out the new supplier-sponsored web site, http://www.tripleplay.tv. This site is intended to be a place where telcos can get information regarding the delivery of video services. There are a number of white papers on the site that discuss topics such as middleware, content, security, access network considerations and consumer electronics. I encourage you to take a look. If you want to participate, contact Kris Sowolla at ksowolla@occamnetworks.com for more information.

Parks Associates – The Home Multimedia Experience:

This two-day seminar is this week in San Jose. I am looking forward to hearing what the industry pundits have to say about where the “converged” home and where it is going. After so many years of hype, it really is becoming a reality – a reality maybe in ways we did not expect. I will report on this seminar in the next issue of the Viodi View.

The Korner:

So, I am eating my bowl of breakfast mini-wheats about a week ago, perusing one of my favorite features in the San Jose Mercury News, the Personal Technology section, when I happen across an article about telcos and their nascent video efforts. As I read a little further, I spot several quotes from Brent Groome of Horry Telephone. Brent did a great job of representing the telcos and explaining why video has to be a part of their services if they are going to compete against cable.
