Brevity, especially in email communications, was another good take-away from the NTCA seminar on communications led by David Bolton. Daniel Burris, the noted futurist, suggests that technology will soon allow the embedding of cell phone speaker and microphones in one\u2019s ear (a combination hearing aid\/cell phone headset<\/strong><\/a>). Combine these two seemingly disparate thoughts and it is not hard to imagine a world in which a persons\u2019 every word and sight (e.g. embedded camera seems plausible) is recorded (search becomes very interesting in that scenario). <\/p>\n Burris\u2019s message to the NTCA audience was to spend an hour a week anticipating the future and identify hard and soft trends that will influence the future. Another lesson, people will, to some extent, overlook production flaws if the content is compelling (thanks interviewees). This article<\/a> points out the work-around for email marketers. Thanks to Jay Cuthrell<\/strong> of Neo Nova<\/strong> for bringing this to my attention. <\/p>\n Upcoming Shows of Interest:<\/strong><\/p>\n People on the Move <\/strong> <\/p>\n John Abel, Lee Ann Burr, Mark Rebholz <\/strong>and Sean Sullivan<\/strong>, all veterans of US Telecom, recently formed a new venture, LightBulb Communications<\/a>.\u00a0Lightbulb has a number of interesting events coming up, including Telecom@ NAB 2007; an interesting mash-up of broadcast, independent telcos and content at this year’s NAB , which will take place in April in Las Vegas.\u00a0 Viodi will be assisting them with their crash course in video production.\u00a0<\/p>\n Kevin Kucher<\/strong>, formerly of GVNW and Canby Telephone, has joined an interesting company, called Home Phone Tunes<\/a>. Home Phone Tunes helps phone companies offer downloadable ringtones to their customers landline telephones.<\/p>\n Bo Ferm<\/strong>, who has been involved with content protection since the beginning of IPTV, has joined Verimatrix<\/a>, the San Diego based provider of content protection technology.<\/p>\n The Korner \u2013 A Klassic Ken Story<\/strong><\/p>\n ViodiTV at NTCA would not have been possible without all of the great support we received:<\/p>\n I cannot adequately express my appreciation for Roger Bindl\u2019s<\/strong> skills, patience and persistence in bringing ViodiTV at NTCA to life. We averaged less than four hours of sleep per night.<\/p>\n The lack of sleep is my excuse for this brief anecdote that occurred at the show. Around 7:00 on Monday night, it was obvious that we would be editing away until the wee hours. Not having a room at this particular hotel, our only choice was to make a run to the hotel caf\u00e9. I made the sojourn for food while Roger continued to edit ViodiTV.<\/p>\n The caf\u00e9 had a counter where patrons could eat or order food-to-go. At the counter, I ran into an unnamed friend and we commenced conversation. After ordering, I realized that I should probably find out if I had ordered the right thing for Roger. Unable to connect to Roger via cell phone, I convinced the waiter to let me take the menu out of the restaurant. I told the waiter my friend would vouch for me.<\/p>\n About ten minutes later, I returned ready to pick up my food and drop off the borrowed menu. I passed my credit card to the waiter, signed the form and said goodbye to my friend. The next day I received a very strange email from my friend suggesting I had stiffed the waiter and not paid the bill. The waiter made my friend pay (remember, he had vouched for me).<\/p>\n Sure, I had a receipt; a receipt that had never been put through the credit card franking machine. Apparently, the waiter thought I was putting it on my hotel room (which I could not do as I was staying in a much, much cheaper accommodation).
