Two hours is about how much video we aired on ViodiTV at OPASTCO\u2019s Winter Convention last week. Thanks to everyone who graciously stood in front of the camera, we were able to capture some interesting comments from the speakers and attendees. <\/p>\n A ViodiTV @ OPASTCO Mash-Up<\/a> <\/strong> <\/p>\n Roger Bindl mashed up and compressed our 2 hours of video into approximately four minutes in this montage video, which features snippets, sound bites and highlights of the OPASTCO<\/strong><\/a> Winter Convention. He does a good job of giving a flavor for this event. It really is a must-attend event for suppliers to the independent telco industry. <\/p>\n “The Face of OPASTCO” <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n In this brief video, John Rose discusses the importance of broadband to the members of OPASTCO and their customers.\u00a0 In his comments at the OPASTCO conference, Rose suggested that there probably would not be much near-term movement on USF and Inter-carrier Compensation policy.\u00a0 He emphasized the need for educating Congress on the importance of broadband to rural America. Click here<\/strong><\/a> to read more and watch the video.<\/p>\n Telecom = Self Determination<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n One of the most enjoyable experiences at the conference was our field trip to Gila River Telecommunications. Derek White, who is with Gila River Telecommunications and is the President of the National Tribal Communications Association, described on the opening day of the conference how telecom service at Gila River was essentially at 3 rd-world standards prior to the formation of tribal-owned Gila River Telecom. This video looks at what Gila River Telecom\u2019s has done to improve the welfare of the people of Gila River by building a state-of-the-art network. The Gila River story reflects the importance of local communications ownership in order to ensure telecom reaches all members of society, wherever they are.<\/p>\n Frontline on the Backburner – Time for the Congress to Rethink Spectrum Sale!<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n In this opinion piece, I wonder if opening up the 700 MHz frequencies to unlicensed applications would provide a greater economic benefit than the $10 or $15 billion proceeds promised by the upcoming auctions. <\/p>\n Will SPRINT Scale back its WiMAX deployment?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n Alan J. This is significant because the already profitable Automattic is the force behind the open source software, WordPress.org. Founder Matt Mullenweg, who just celebrated his 24th birthday, suggested in his blog post<\/strong><\/a> that the focus is on the long-term and about growing what they have started. This is good news for the future of WordPress. Kudos to Matt and the virtual Automattic team, which numbered less than 20 people prior to the financing. [ViodiTV is powered by the WordPress.org software].<\/p>\n A Mixed Bag of IPTV and a Big Scoop from OPASTCO<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n IPTV was the topic of many of the panel discussions. Club.Viodi membership is only open to independent telcos and is made available at the sole discretion of Viodi, LLC.<\/p>\n People on the Move<\/strong><\/p>\n We recently caught up with Ann Weinberg<\/strong>.\u00a0 Many of you will remember Ann from CHR Solutions and from her involvement with the Texas Telephone Cooperative Association.\u00a0 A little more than a year ago, Ann and her husband moved to rural Virginia to be nearer family. Subsequently, she joined a very interesting group, the Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative<\/a> (MBC). With a 700-mile optic backbone, this Cooperative is spurring economic development and making the region attractive to both U.S. and multinational corporations.<\/p>\n Jeremy Warnick<\/strong> of Seachange<\/a> is making an interesting move, as he is leaving the cable industry for LoJack<\/a> Corp. Instead of worrying about protecting content, Jeremy will now be concerned about car security and retrieval. I have to thank Jeremy for his contributions, including this one in the last issue regarding the Flip Video camcorder.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n Don McCullough<\/strong> of Entrisphere\/Ericsson also weighed in on his experience with the Flip Video camcorder<\/strong><\/a>. He has had more success than I did concerning video editing in non-linear editing programs (at least with Windows Movie Maker). Another reader commented on an HD resolution camera in the same price range as the Flip \u2013 see the comments here. Thanks for the comments!<\/p>\n The Korner – Three Korners This Time <\/strong><\/p>\n Despite the limitations, the Flip Video camcorder is so convenient to carry around in a pocket, ready at moment\u2019s notice to capture something at a moment\u2019s notice. This video serves as an example of how magic moments can be captured that would otherwise be lost. The Flip Video camcorder shot these video clips of Roger Nishi entering the OPASTCO conference. What is especially interesting about this piece is Roger Bindl\u2019s editing, particularly what he does to my mug. <\/p>\n One of the filler pieces that seemed to resonate with viewers of ViodiTV at OPASTCO was the short video that Roger Bindl created from a speech given by Dave McClure on actress and inventor Heddy Lamar. We could have really driven ratings if Roger had just added the infamous scene of her running through the forest. <\/p>\n Ben Stein did his job as a keynote speaker at the OPASTCO Winter Convention. He had the audience laughing with his dry humor, crying as he described the courage of recovering soldiers at the Walter Reed medical facility and reflecting as he quoted Martin Luther King at least three times during his speech. He suggests that urban America can learn a lesson from rural America , as well as the armed forces regarding the importance of community.
