KP Goes To Hollywood – An update from the Digital Hollywood Conference – Sept. 30th, 2003<\/strong><\/em><\/strong>

A few weeks ago, I alluded to the importance of conference attendance as a long-term investment to help give telco personnel the skills they need to stay current. Several upcoming conferences were mentioned, but I failed to mention one of the most relevant regarding video and other sorts of content; Digital Hollywood. <\/strong><\/em> <\/p>\n

Digital Hollywood<\/em> is truly a Hollywood event, starting with its location at the Directors Guild of America <\/strong>Building in West Hollywood, CA. This is the ideal venue for this conference, as it is well appointed with two theatrical-style conference rooms. The topics covered today include gaming, advertising, digital cable and satellite strategies, DVD, Television on Demand and Digital Rights Management<\/strong>. And that was just today\u0092s agenda – there are two more days of this fun-fest.<\/p>\n

I attended the session, \u0093Digital Cable and Satellite Television Strategies: Channel Launches, SVOD-VOD, HDTV, International and Interactive<\/a>.\u0094 This panel had a good mix of operators and programmers. There seemed to be general agreement among the panelists that marketing is becoming more and more critical for both linear (i.e. scheduled programming) and on-demand content. To that point, the panelists pointed out that the quantity of channels is not as critical as providing quality programming and making customers aware of its availability. The importance of creating a sense of urgency<\/strong> in an on-demand world was emphasized.<\/p>\n

The other panel I had a chance to see was titled, \u0093Beyond Movies: Television on Demand \u0096 New Revenue Generating Opportunities from the Syndication and Delivery of On-Demand Content.<\/a>\u0094 There were some truly unique ideas and approaches for on-demand business offered up in this panel. <\/p>\n

Lastly, there was an interesting mix of sponsors and exhibitors, ranging from production equipment to content providers to Digital Rights Management. The exhibitors and how their products might apply to independent telcos will be discussed in another issue of the Viodi View.<\/p>\n
