A lesson learned for me at NTCA’s Annual Meeting is the importance of precise communications. Brevity, especially in email communications, was another good take-away from the NTCA seminar on communications led by David Bolton. We will try to implement this by having more links and a shorter body to this email newsletter.
Check out www.viodi.tv for a partial look at some of our video coverage at NTCA’s annual meeting. Look here for interviews with Dan Mitchell and Shirley Bloomfield of NTCA and David Crothers of NDATC. Art Brodsky of Public Knowledge, Mark Rubin of Alltel and Chris Libertelli of Skype discuss net neutrality and the importance of broadband. Look for more interviews in the next issue of the Viodi View.

Exclusive – FCC Commissioner McDowell on Wireless, Broadband CALEA & More
Check out this exclusive video interview with FCC Commissioner McDowell that was follow-up to his presentation at the NTCA Annual Meeting.
Wireless Broadband as the Future……
This sound bite, from McDowell’s keynote speech, concerned one independent telco, General Manager. Click here to listen to the sound bite and to read additional commentary.
You’re Magnetic Ink – Or a 3-D Hologram
A General Manager of an independent telco commented to me that he believes that broadband CALEA (a mandate that requires ISPs to allow access to their routers to Law Enforcement Agencies) eventually will be changed such that ISPs will be required to store all data that traverses their network. Daniel Burris, the noted futurist, suggests that technology will soon allow the embedding of cell phone speaker and microphones in one’s ear (a combination hearing aid/cell phone headset). Combine these two seemingly disparate thoughts and it is not hard to imagine a world in which a persons’ every word and sight (e.g. embedded camera seems plausible) is recorded (search becomes very interesting in that scenario).
Burris’s message to the NTCA audience was to spend an hour a week anticipating the future and identify hard and soft trends that will influence the future. To view our exclusive video interview with Mr. Burris, click here.
Lessons Learned from Producing ViodiTV @ NTCA
One of the many lessons we learned, invest in labor saving equipment, especially when on a tight deadline. Another lesson, people will, to some extent, overlook production flaws if the content is compelling (thanks interviewees). Club Viodi members can read the rest of our lessons by clicking here.

As telecom companies deploy video, the best place in the world to learn about video production and distribution is the annual NAB Convention. NAB is NOW the essential destination for any service provider deploying digital video services. Just ask telecom’s competitors, the cable and satellite industries . . . they have been attending NAB for years. NAB 2007 is by far the largest gathering of electronic media executives, trendsetters and visionaries anywhere, anytime. Telecom carriers need video technology to complete and the established destination for video is NAB 2007. Telecom@ NAB is a series of educational conferences and networking events consisting of:
- Broadband Video Conference
- Telecom Technology Papers Conference
- Telecom Video Production Crash Course
- Telecom Supplier Exhibits
- NAB2007 Exhibit Floor Tours
We strongly believe that NAB 2007 is an important destination for the service provider community. And we believe that this series of events combined with our industry experience and relationships will dramatically increase the number of carriers that will attend NAB 2007 and prove to be a valuable networking opportunity for our exhibitors/speakers/sponsors.
To learn how your company can participate in Telecom@ NAB2007, please contact [email protected] or 703-596-4133.
New Outlook Messes Up Email Marketing
Microsoft has changed their HTML rendering engine in Outlook 2007 from Internet Explorer to MS Word. This article points out the work-around for email marketers. Thanks to Jay Cuthrell of Neo Nova for bringing this to my attention.
- IPTV 2007 Technology Conference in San Jose , February 27th/28th – Speakers include representatives from AT&T, SK Telecom & France Telecom
- Minnesota Telecom Alliance – Roger will be providing coverage of the largest state independent telephone conference.
- Cal Tel Association’s Annual Meeting, March 12th-14th – theme is “competition in communications, while sustaining universal service.”
- VON Conference in San Jose – March 19th-22nd. Always good for learning about cutting-edge video technologies.
- IP Possibilities Conference – April 9th-13th in Minneapolis, MN. Always a good conference for all things IP.
- Telecom at NAB – April 17th/18th in Las Vegas. This conference will feature the convergence of telecom and video.
John Abel, Lee Ann Burr, Mark Rebholz and Sean Sullivan, all veterans of US Telecom, recently formed a new venture, LightBulb Communications. Lightbulb has a number of interesting events coming up, including Telecom@ NAB 2007; an interesting mash-up of broadcast, independent telcos and content at this year’s NAB , which will take place in April in Las Vegas. Viodi will be assisting them with their crash course in video production.
Kevin Kucher, formerly of GVNW and Canby Telephone, has joined an interesting company, called Home Phone Tunes. Home Phone Tunes helps phone companies offer downloadable ringtones to their customers landline telephones.
Bo Ferm, who has been involved with content protection since the beginning of IPTV, has joined Verimatrix, the San Diego based provider of content protection technology.
The Korner – A Klassic Ken Story
ViodiTV at NTCA would not have been possible without all of the great support we received:
- The interviewees who overlooked our production bloopers and trusted our editing.
- Innovative Systems for taking a leap of faith and sponsoring ViodiTV.
- NTCA and its staff for helping us get some great interviews (thanks Wendy)
- All of our independent telco friends who give us encouraging words of support both for ViodiTV and the Viodi View.
I cannot adequately express my appreciation for Roger Bindl’s skills, patience and persistence in bringing ViodiTV at NTCA to life. We averaged less than four hours of sleep per night.
The lack of sleep is my excuse for this brief anecdote that occurred at the show. Around 7:00 on Monday night, it was obvious that we would be editing away until the wee hours. Not having a room at this particular hotel, our only choice was to make a run to the hotel café. I made the sojourn for food while Roger continued to edit ViodiTV.
The café had a counter where patrons could eat or order food-to-go. At the counter, I ran into an unnamed friend and we commenced conversation. After ordering, I realized that I should probably find out if I had ordered the right thing for Roger. Unable to connect to Roger via cell phone, I convinced the waiter to let me take the menu out of the restaurant. I told the waiter my friend would vouch for me.
About ten minutes later, I returned ready to pick up my food and drop off the borrowed menu. I passed my credit card to the waiter, signed the form and said goodbye to my friend. The next day I received a very strange email from my friend suggesting I had stiffed the waiter and not paid the bill. The waiter made my friend pay (remember, he had vouched for me).
Sure, I had a receipt; a receipt that had never been put through the credit card franking machine. Apparently, the waiter thought I was putting it on my hotel room (which I could not do as I was staying in a much, much cheaper accommodation). I had to hunt down my friend and pay him back in cash.
I will let you draw your own lesson from this Klassic Ken story (I would love to hear what that lesson is).
Thanks again for the support of ViodiTV.

The Video Business Case for Independent Telcos – The Report
Viodi’s report, Video Business Case provides results to a survey of independent telcos and their business case for video. Most of the telcos that responded to the survey have figured out a way to deploy video services. This survey provides insight from the independent telcos as well as several of their Engineering firms.
