By Ken Pyle, ken.pyle at viodi.com, Managing Editor, Viodi View

Summer is the time for camps, camping and vacation. Take away Internet access, or at least make it hard to get, and it becomes almost impossible to stay connected to the working world. Of course, with July 4th falling on Wednesday, last week was slow all around. As a result, we deferred publication of the Viodi View until today.

Customized Local Content Workshops – 408 551 0320

Last week was also a time of recovery from the Web Video 2.0 Summit that was held in San Jose on June 28 th and 29 th in San Jose. Dave Burstein did an excellent job of putting together a program that brought together a variety of speakers from the different disciplines required to bring video from camera to the television or PC or mobile.

Burstein’s Big Idea

The format of the conference was unique in that Burstein discourages long monologues and encouraged interactive panels. He challenged the panelists to leave the audience with “one big idea”. We will be posting some of our video interviews along with some of the big ideas in the next few weeks on ViodiTV. In the meantime, check out this interview with Dave Burstein and hear his big ideas.

Training Tricks & More

It was a huge honor for me to moderate a couple of panels with top-notch speakers at this event. Speakers on my panel included Jan Kabili, author of over 10 books on Photoshop, Lynda Weinmann of the uber-online training company, Lynda.com and Alex Lindsay of Pixelcorps, which is essentially a video production guild for the 21 st century. Olivier Garbe, CEO of Winnov, rounded out the panel. Olivier and I collaborated on the following video, which introduced our big ideas.

Merchant’s Pumpkin and Dance of Life Featured

One of the highlights for me at the Web Video Summit was to see the screening of Roger Bindl ’s videos, The Merchant’s Pumpkin and The Dance of Life, as part of the evening screening. Not content to sit on his laurels, Roger flew back to Wisconsin and created this brief, entertaining video documenting a historical re-enactment in rural Wisconsin . It is 2007 and FTTH is Finally Here

My commentary on the brief video posted about Verizon’s millionth FIOS customer caused a bit of a stir in the previous issue of the Viodi View (click here to see the comments).. If I came across as skeptical, it may be because of the lingering wounds from the RBOCs’ false broadband starts of the early to mid-1990s. Times have changed, however, and now the FTTH deployments are real and there is no going back. To get some perspective of what things were like in 1994, click here to read this paper from the National Fiber Optics Engineering Conference that predicted FTTH sometime between 2007 and 2018.

ViodiTV @ OPASTCO in Alaska – July 14th–19th

This time next week, Anchorage will be the place to meet with independent telcos, as OPASTCO’s Summer Convention makes it way to this northern berg. Thanks to Innovative Systems, ViodiTV will be broadcasting almost live coverage of this important event on television channels on at least two of the convention hotels. Look for us at this event – we will be the people with the camcorders.

Also, if you get a chance, register for the OPASTCO U event on Sunday. Roger has put together an excellent program that details the convergence of video and the web. Another presentation that should be of interest to Viodi View readers will be from Matanuska Telephone and Packet Vision regarding the deployment of local advertising in an IPTV network.

Bull and Bear Debate Part III: Enterprise Wireless LANs – Are the advantages worth the risks? by Alan J. Weissberger

Cisco continues to push its Unified Wireless Network for enterprises, which was their main message at the June 26th IT Roadmap Conference in Santa Clara, CA.  While probably 70% of enterprises have some WiFi, less than 10% have pervasive access everywhere within their building or campus.  Cisco would like to greatly increase Enterprise WiFi penetration by offering features like: enhanced security, location and tracking services, and secure guest access.  But others see problems with company wide WiFi and wonder if the benefits are worth the risks- financial, security, scalability, availability.  In an article entitled, “Helpless, Hopeless, Wireless,”  the June 26, 2007 Wall Street Journal (again) takes a pessimistic view of this technology stating that, “in many offices, Wi-Fi has been a headache.”  The Aberdeen Group weighs in with a recent research report that endeavors to measure enterprise WiFi value proposition to companies.

We delve deeper into the pros and cons of Enterprise WiFi networks in this article.

Internet TV Technology Conference (iTV Con)

San Jose, CA July 17th

This can’t miss event is designed for content providers, aggregators, operators and technology providers.  Understand which technologies are enabling new business models for broadband-delivered video.  Examine how content is delivered and monetized through game consoles, cell phones, media centers, networked DTVs, set-top-boxes, etc.  Understand how to guarantee Quality of Service and Quality of Experience for ‘over-the-top’ video services.  Broadband TV and interactivity represent paradigm shifts in the way content will be consumed, created and delivered.  iTV Con is the premier industry forum to develop a comprehensive strategy to take advantage of the next wave in digital entertainment.

People on the Move

“Telcos or programmers looking for an experienced marketing and content person should take a close look at Michael Thompson.  Thompson understands the programmer’s mindset through his years of work at Showtime Networks.  His experience at Clear Source and Knology honed his skills in new product launches, packaging/pricing and competitive market strategy.  Contact Michael at 678.687.1077 / mthompsonGA at comcast.net.

The Korner – Back to Kamp

For many kids, summer is a time of camps. I had some first-hand experience with a camp that is relevant to the technology perceptive Viodi View reader, called Camp Invention. My wife served as Camp Director for the Silicon Valley version of this weeklong, day camp that inspires kids from kindergarten to sixth grade to start thinking like inventors.

Organized by the National Inventors Hall of Fame in Akron Ohio, the curriculum is a bit history, a bit patent law, a bit applied science and a whole lot of hands on fun. It truly is a “camp in a box”, as the National Inventors Hall of Fame supplies all of the material, except for old electronic appliances. The staffing consists of local teachers with the support of teenage counselors.

The camp definitely made an impact as one of my sons told me how he awoke the other day thinking of inventions; something he probably would not have done prior to Camp Invention. Camp Invention could be an interesting community-building event for the independent telco. It also could be an interesting sponsorship opportunity for any company involved with technology.
