Another day, another airport….greetings from San Jose Mineta International airport. For once, I am not rushing to a plane. I actually have time to lounge in a lounge and watch, out of the corner of my eye, game seven of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals. In this era of sports dynasties, it is fun to watch and root for a couple of underdogs vie for the pinnacle of their sport. Ever since the television show, I have always had a soft spot for the Underdog.

Next Stop, Chicago

Sitting in the bar, without the distraction of the Internet, also gives me a chance to contemplate the weeks ahead. The main area of focus for me for the next two weeks is working with USTA to put the final touches on the IP Video @ Supercomm conference in Chicago. Everything is pretty much set in terms of speakers and agenda for this conference that will focus on content for the bundled service network. As usual, we will have more content than is possible to fit into the allotted time. Fortunately, we will have a chance for post-conference networking at the Chicago White Sox-Cleveland Indians baseball game. I encourage you to sign up, if you get a chance. To get a preview of this conference, please click here.

VoIPossibilities CD-ROM – Just About Available

I always have mixed feelings when I send a Viodi-produced CD-ROM. On one hand, it is a great relief to complete a project, while on the other hand there is always the uneasy feeling that there could be undiscovered errors. Maybe that is why my stomach is a flutter (either that, or it was the water), as, today, I shipped NTCA the master CD-ROM of their VoIPossibilities conference. These CD-ROMs are a great way to relive or share conferences with colleagues. I know I picked up several things from listening to this CD-ROM – things that I missed when I was at this conference. Rising Oil Prices & the Link to Telecom…

Oil shocks, rising prices, dwindling supplies…..it was 1979 and I remember reading an article on the wall of my high school economics class that described the horrible conditions that resulted from this energy crisis. Of course, when I first read these words, I thought they were referring to the dismal economic climate that afflicted the U.S. It was only when I got to the end of the article that I realized that they were talking about the 1850s and the shortage of whale oil. That article taught me a number of things, but, first and foremost I learned that as prices rise, it becomes profitable to substitute goods that otherwise would have been too expensive to bring to market.

Well, I am reminded of the 70s again, with all of the people I hear whining about the price of gas. I even read in the latest issue of the National Geographic that someday soon we will begin seeing a decline in oil production (I am sure it will happen someday – although in the 70s, I remember “experts” predicting that we would be out of oil by now and, oh yeah, that there would be global cooling). This article is not a discussion of the future. Instead, it is intended to give telcos some ideas as to how to make the most of today’s interesting situation. Click here to see what I mean (Must be a Club.Viodi member). Bear with me on this article and my trip through the 70s…I eventually get to the point….

The Korner: Fun Stuff From Roger Bindl

As I have written about and you may have seen, Roger Bindl is a creative fellow with a strong telecom background. He has an interesting web site, which always has some fun stuff. He put together this quiz that I found very entertaining. Ok, I only got an A- on the quiz, but it does make this week’s Korner.
