“We are dedicated to solving this problem (pedestrian/bike/auto safety). It’s a hard problem, but we think we can solve it,” said Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang at this week’s GPU Technology Conference. This is just one of the many challenges Huang, his team and the larger Nvidia ecosystem are pursuing.
Project Clara, which effectively upgrades existing, two-dimensional, low-resolution, medical imaging machines into three-dimensional, real-time video capture devices through cloud-based, AI-powered, GPUs, will revolutionize diagnosis, while providing ordinary humans a way to visualize the inner-workings of the body. Digital Opportunities through Grassroots Efforts

“This is the real story of America; how people in small towns and big cities alike are coming together to try to create what I call, digital opportunity,” exclaims Ajit Pai, in the ViodiTV interview filmed on March 21st at the ACA Summit. Pai describes how the grassroots efforts to build broadband were a recurring theme of his recent road trips, where he met with various groups including municipal utilities, start-up networks and tribal nations. These local efforts to build broadband networks inspire his perspective on regulation.
Pai: Closing Digital Divide is FCC’s “Top Policy Priority” by Steve Pastorkovich

Closing the digital divide and reducing regulations were hallmarks of Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai’s March 21st keynote address to the American Cable Association’s 25thAnnual Summit. He began his remarks by commenting on how small cable companies have evolved over the past quarter century, expanding their offerings from one-way video to robust broadband, in addition to other services.
FCC Commissioners Talk USF, Infrastructure at ACA Summit by Steve Pastorkovich

Federal Communications Commissioners Mignon Clyburn and Michael O’Rielly participated in a panel discussion at the American Cable Association’s 25th Annual Summit. Broadband infrastructure and the Universal Service Fund (USF) were major topics of conversation. Held in Washington, D.C. on March 21, the session was moderated by Tina Pidgeon, the Senior Vice President of Government Affairs for GCI.
Non-Board OCP Equipment Purchases Top $1.2B in 2017 by Alan Weissberger

The OCP (Open Compute Project) commissioned IHS Markit to do a market study of who, besides OCP Board members, were using OCP specified hardware and to estimate/forecast the resulting revenue. Also, to identify concerns and barriers to successful deployments. Cliff Grossner, Ph.D. Sr. Research Director & Advisor Cloud & Data Center Research Practice at IHS Markit presented the results of that study along with two colleagues at the OCP Summit Tuesday afternoon, March 20th.
Connected Signals without DSRC or Other Traffic Signal Retrofits

A signaling system about the signaling system is the essence of the problem that technologies like DSRC (Dedicated Short-Range Communications) are trying to solve. That is, what sort of fuel efficiencies and safety improvements could be made if drivers simply knew when a light would change from red to green or were told how fast to drive to ensure they didn’t have to stop at the light?
Some Tweets and Short Thoughts:
- It pained me to miss this week’s MTA Annual Conference and Convention, but NTCA’s Shirley Bloomfield provides an excellent summary that paints a picture of this productive three-day event and how MTA members are continuing to bring broadband to the unserved in Minnesota.
- Former Rep. Billy Tauzin “We all have an obligation to forgive each other….Be kind, be fair, be understanding….broadband should not be a partisan issue.”
#Summit25 - RT @JessicaRosenworcel “Blockchain has captured the world’s attention. It’s easy to get lost in the ballyhoo. But distributed ledger technology could be a cool tool in our future #<wireless world–and help us use
#spectrum more efficiently. I wrote about it in @Wired.” @ Viodi This is a brilliant idea. If it could be made to work, it create more efficient allocation of spectrum without human intervention, maximizing the utilization of this public resource. - RT @DriverlessNow “Iowa City preparing for how autonomous vehicles may impact the city.” Other cities would be smart to take a similar look at the impact of AV, as, once deployments start, it seem like overnight in the time-frame of the built-environment.
The Korner – It’s the Edge Cases You’ve Got to Get Right

“Data as the new source code,” was one of the many thought-provoking statements made by Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang in his keynote speech at Nvidia’s GPU Technology Conference. Autonomous vehicle expert and Princeton professor, Alain Kornhauser, helps us decode Huang’s intense 2 hour+ keynote and provides his sage perspective on several related topics that are in the news including:
- Autonomous Vehicle safety
- Waymo’s announcement with Jaguar and its potential impact
- Whether 5G is a must-have or nice-to-have for autonomous vehicle operation
