Viodi View – 05/04/20

A sort of continuing education for the host is one way to describe the ViodiTV Real-Time conversations. This ongoing weekly experiment brings together experts in technology, rural broadband, telecommunications, and mobility to uncover gems of knowledge about these topics and more. It is also having the side effect of documenting the shutdown from the perspectives of the speakers as it is difficult to have a conversation these days without that subject appearing.

Could the use of video conferencing lead to a shift whereby Congress spends more time with their constituents than in Washington D.C.? Is the greatest digital divide that of platforms and technology? Those were just a couple of the questions explored in the May 1st conversation with NTCA CEO, Shirley Bloomfield, and Plus One Strategic Communications. president and CEO, Tanya Sullivan.  Bloomfield and Sullivan also talk about lessons learned and the experience of NTCA’s recent virtual legislative conference, NTCA’s CyberShare program, and what they will miss least and most about the shutdown.

In the midst of economic gloom, a phoenix rising from the ashes is the metaphor that comes to mind when reflecting upon last week’s Agility Prime Launch Event. Agility Prime is a non-traditional Air Force program with the intent to “accelerate the commercial market for advanced air mobility vehicles.” Leveraging government testing and revenue-generating use cases for distributed logistics and disaster response, the Air Force hopes to catalyze the commercial market for advanced air mobility vehicles or orbs (flying, electric, vertical take-off aircraft) by 2023.

It was a privilege to play a tiny part in last week’s SmartDrivingCar Zoom-Tank Zoominar, which brought together experts in the academic, technology, and venture capital worlds to discuss autonomous vehicles. This Shark Tank-style program packed a full day’s worth of content into 1.5 hours. The @Viodi tweetstorm captured the essence, but Lance Eliot provided a more in-depth take in this Forbes article.

  • NineStar Connect has an amazing story of how they brought fiber to a temporary COVID-19 testing facility in a matter of days, as opposed to the months it would normally take to navigate the permit process. It was fun and informative to help edit this Calix interview and attempt to recreate in images their inspiring work to bring telehealth capabilities to a strip mall parking lot.
  • Here is a heartwarming story in Sports Illustrated about a young athlete who’s eyesight issue was misdiagnosed until a doctor used the RightEye technology. As seen in this ViodiTV interview with RightEye CEO & Co-Founder, Adam Gross, their solution is applicable for telehealth applications ranging from early childhood development issues to concussions to brain health issues.

Scott Falci is testing the bounds of the human-machine interface through the nonprofit he founded, Falci Adaptive Motorsports. The name describes what they do, as they are adapting race cars so they can be driven without using traditional controls (hmmm one has to think that the RightEye technology would be a useful supplement to his cars). In one sense, what Falci and his team have done is like the hands-free control of a wheelchair; a wheelchair that races to 130 miles per hour.
