The carefree highway may only be a metaphor in a song, but the words also capture the essence of the post-World War II freedom afforded by the car. Within a few hours, one can be in an entirely new setting and, at least in the summer of 2020, in a state with entirely different rules and a completely different mindset. In some sense, 2020 hearkens back to an earlier, less connected time when the highways were the main connection between distinct regions of the United States.
Tires Built for MaaS & More #CES2020

Travel down the highway or around town will be much more carefree if the tires on display at Bridgestone’s CES2020 booth match their promise. The tires of the future won’t use air, will use much less rubber, and will be recyclable. This promises to create a much more sustainable and environmentally-friendly way for the rubber to hit the road.
Cell Sites, Solar & Super Capacitors – Off-Grid for 5G & More

“The electrical load of the site has tripled, if not quadrupled,” due to the advent of 5G radio components according to CICUSA CEO, Marty Snyder. This means that his team needed to increase the photovoltaic (PV) solar panel array on an existing off-grid cell site to 15 kiloWatts to generate enough power for the added load due to 5G. As an aside, this was the first in-field Viodi interview since February and it couldn’t have been at a better location.
From Cheerleader to Rodeo Champion

Breaking barriers and breaking broncs is one way to describe what RIDE TV’s Sarah Brown and her teammates are doing on the rodeo circuit. RIDE TV cameras have been documenting the groundbreaking adventures of these pioneering women through the TV show, Cowgirls. The interview with Brown is a fun look back at TIS19 in Chicago, while providing a preview for Season 3 of Cowgirls, which debuts on August 26th.
Great Lessons from America’s Everyday Comedian

Behind the humor, comedians often have great insight into the human condition. C Will Myles, commonly known as America’s Everyday Comedian, is no exception as his academic background of psychology and theater set up a career that goes beyond comedy and includes motivational speeches. Kristi Westbrock of CTC hired C. Willi to make a virtual appearance at a recent all-staff meeting, as she detailed in this ViodiTV interview.

- Automated vehicle testing in rural America is going to take place on a 47-mile route through Iowa City, Kalona, Riverside, and Hills. - Robin Chase on the SmartDrivingCar podcast, “If we don’t charge for zero occupancy vehicles, we are going to be using those vehicles to do any useless thing.” Now, is the time to put in the policies to address the negative externalities of autonomous vehicles.
- Divided Highways looks like an informative read about how the Interstate Highway system evolved into a network that went through cities, instead of just connecting them. David Zipper has an informative Tweet review of the book here.
The Korner – Is this a Tornado or a Dust Devil?

Rain and thunder made an appearance just after lunch on August 11th, 2020 in the Fernley, Nevada area. Did a tornado also touch down in the alkaline flats about 15-miles past this industrious town on I-80, near Brady Hot Springs? Or was this just a routine desert dust devil kicking up alkaline giving it an appearance of a small tornado? Or, was it a landspout?
Weather Underground’s reporting confirms the weather conditions in the area.
As context, just prior to this video segment, a funnel cloud appeared high in the clouds, which prompted this reporter to put his handy GoPro Hero 8 into action. Unfortunately, even with the GoPro Hero 8’s stabilization couldn’t remove the smudges from the windshield.
[Note, the iconic song coincidentally playing in the background of the video]
