The previous issue of the Viodi View, set high expectations for the 2018 Independent Show, suggesting it would match the glory days of the Western Cable Show (C-SPAN video from 1994). As seen in the glimpses from the next three interviews, #TIS18 exceeded expectations. The Independent Show is always consistent in its mix of timely content, great networking and entertainment for the entire family.
OTT Morphing & Providing More Choice – #TIS18 Highlights – Part 1
Over-the-Top video is morphing into an offering that NCTC members are making available through their platforms, providing consumers more choice and convenience, according to Rich Fickle, NCTC president and CEO. Viodi caught up with Fickle at the 2018 Independent Show, where he offered highlights from TIS18. Echoing many of the TIS18 speakers, he suggests that operators need to put customers at the center of their product offerings and the associated messaging.
Bringing People Together to Build Relationships – #TIS Highlights – Part 2
The Independent Show is about bringing people together to build relationships, according to American Cable Association President and CEO, Matt Polka, filmed at last week’s TIS18 in Anaheim. Polka stresses that the family aspects of the conference make it unique and provides a foundation for business relationships that extend beyond the length of the 4-day conference.
Welcome to OTMR #TIS18
OTMR – One Touch Make-Ready will soon be the rule of the land; at least in the thirty states governed by the FCC’s latest rules on pole attachments. Although this sounds like a droll topic, it could have a significant impact on broadband deployment, as an economic study by Corning estimates that it could trigger “approximately 8.3 million incremental premises passed with fiber and about $12.6 billion in incremental fiber capital expenditures.” ACA’s Ross Lieberman gives his thoughts on the impact on this ruling in this interview from #TIS18.
The Elevator Pitch – Share the Road, Share a Ride
Share a ride in the same way that an elevator is shared is Dr. Alain Kornhauser’s plea in above interview filmed at the AVS18 conference. Further, in a recent SmartDrivingCar podcast with Fred Fishkin, Kornhauser calculated that with the 80,000+ vehicles Waymo has on order, they could be providing 4 million rides per day within 24 months.
A New Kind of Transit Agency #SmartDrivingCar
In a similar vein as Kornhauser, Bern Grush, co-author of The End of Driving, discusses how technology is allowing transit agencies to examine how to best achieve their goals associated with providing mobility for the citizens they serve. Grush’s suggestions parallel the sottware-centric approach we see in telecom, where the data (the buses), control(any signaling or routing information to the buses) and management planes (bus diagnostics, operational conditions) are separated. This gives the service provider (e.g. the transit agency) greater flexibility in vendor choice as it allows the mixing of functions and suppliers.
Some Tweets and Short Thoughts:
- Odd timing, but less than an hour after publishing video about #OTMR, the local electric utility replaced 50+ year-old pole in my backyard. Not exactly the same use-case as #OTMR. Will be interesting to see how long it takes the CATV & Telco providers to transfer their wires & remove the old pole.
- The hardest working guy in retirement, former GTE/Verizon Dick Jones, just released his new book, Identity Check.
- Instead of bouncy houses at his birthday parties, he had rodeos. Congratulations to Carrington, North Dakota-bred, college student, Bridger Anderson (and mom, telecom-marketing whiz, Robin Anderson) on his first ProRodeo win.
The Korner – A Variety and Class Act at #TIS18 #
Bonnie Raitt and Tower of Power are just a few of the name entertainment icons that entertained thousands at the long-gone, Western Cable Show. As good as those acts were at that event, none could compare to Darci Lynne Farmer, a variety-act bundled into a 13-year old girl from small-town Oklahoma.
With her puppet friends, Petunia and Oscar, among others, she kept the Wednesday morning audience entertained with her ventriloquism, singing and wit. Demonstrating why she was the 2017 winner of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent show, her rapport with the audience was that of a professional speaker. Her creativity shone through when she pulled a couple of NCTC members to the stage and turned them into human-puppets.
Despite all her talent and relatively sudden fame, she remains firmly grounded in her small town, attending the same public school with the same friends. Her schedule sounds less demanding than many kids who take part in travel sports, as, when school is in session, she only travels two weekends a month to perform. She is diligent in practicing and refining her art. Looking at her Twitter feed, she also uses her talents to help others.
In a question and answer session, she mentioned that she was excited to go Disneyland, as it was her first time to the Magic Kingdom. When the next session had started and Darci Lynne was on her way out, she made sure to thank NCTC CEO and president, Rich Fickle, for the opportunity to perform and confirmed that this was her visit to house of Mickey. As much as I wanted to interview this teenage prodigy, and I am sure this gracious young woman would have done an interview, it didn’t seem right to delay her fun at Disneyland.
Thanks NBC for bringing Darci Lynn to #TIS18 and thanks #TIS for your support of Viodi in its coverage of the show.
