The beginning of this month marks a decade since the publication of my fictional story of what the year 2040 might look like, because of shared, electrified, and autonomous mobility. In 2024, the autonomous vehicle space still feels like the early days of broadband or Video on Demand (VOD).
As has been written before, at the turn of the century everyone knew broadband and VOD would be game-changers. It just wasn’t clear what all the obstacles would be and what game(s) these technologies would change. Read more in the Korner about a recent conference that looked at obstacles and opportunities of autonomous mobility.

Better Data Leads to Automation Which Leads to New Services and Better Support
The June 6th BASe webinar, Advancements in Broadband User Services and Customer Experience, triggered a thought on yet another parallel between broadband and autonomous driving. Automation grows the pie by creating products and services that might otherwise be too expensive to provide. Done well, it removes the friction associated with technology.
Time’s Ticking for HOAs to Meet Federal Reporting Requirements
Up to $250,000 in fines and 2 years in jail are the potential penalties for organizations (for-profit or non-profit) that willfully do not comply with new federal reporting requirements. Ronald J. Barba, a Managing Partner with Bender, Anderson, and Barba, P.C., provides background on FinCEN (Financial Crime Enforcement Network) and what it means for homeowners associations (HOAs) and their respective boards. Even though the focus of the interview is HOA’s, it appears to apply to any entity registered with a secretary of state.
Broadband Forum Service Provider Multi-Tenant FWA Survey
This brief video of Mike Talbert, the Broadband Forum’s Project Stream Lead for Multi-Tenant Fixed Wireless Access, captures a bit of the flavor of the collaborative nature of the Broadband Forum. This impromptu call for input from service providers would only have happened in an in-person event.
The Start of a Journey to Deliver the Last 50 Feet
A journey of a thousand miles may begin with a single step, but the most difficult part of a package’s journey is the last 50 feet. It is between the delivery truck and a consumer’s residence that is difficult to automate. Vault Robotics, a spinout from the Safe Robotics Lab at Princeton University, is early in its journey to help tackle the delivery van-to-doorstep challenge.
Some Chirps and Short Thoughts
- Kudos to everyone behind the progress made at the Broadband Forum’s Summer Meeting in Incheon, South Korea. Great job summarizing, Proactive International PR.
- @Merrit Baer “Free idea: instead of parties, sponsor childcare at big conferences. I would remember and love that brand way more than if you gave me a free drink.”
- Aaron and Drew employees of Iowa’s Premier Communications rescued 30 people from the recent floods. They are great examples of people from local providers who make a difference in rural U.S.A.
The Korner – Common Sense about Smart Driving
It was a lucky coincidence that Princeton’s 6th SmartDrivingCars Summit coincided with the decade anniversary of the publication of Google’s Potential End Game – Transport and Organize the World’s People, Not Just Information. What differentiates this conference is its host, Dr. Alain Kornhauser, and his focus on people.
