Innovation has always been a common theme of the Fiber Broadband Association’s Fiber Connect 2024 conference. The Proof of Concepts at FiberConnect 2024 will show how standards and open broadband software from the Broadband Forum enable innovation and new offerings. Learn more here about the PoCs.

Technical Deep Dives at Fiber Connect 2024
One of the other aspects of my involvement with Fiber Connect 2024 was helping to shape the content and recruit speakers for the Technical Deep Dives track. Having had a chance to review the slides and talk to the speakers, this will be an informative track. Stop by and say hello as I will be either behind the camera or on stage moderating.

The Blender Theory Driving Fiber Deployment
This interview filmed with altafiber’s Rob Shema provides a great example of the quality of speakers that FiberConnect attracts. In this interview, Shema discusses a hybrid model of fiber deployment for solving the digital divide in rural areas. This so-called blender theory is a way to stretch limited public funding.
Defining How to Apply Low Latency, Low Loss, and Scalable Throughput (L4S) in Broadband Networks
Jonathan Newton of Vodafone and Director for the Broadband Forum’s Access and Transport Architecture Work Area discusses a just-approved project to study how the IETF’s L4S (Low Latency, Low Loss, and Scalable) applies to the broadband network. Championed by familiar brands, such as Apple, Nokia, and Intel, the L4S initiative aims to reduce end-to-end queuing delay.
Some Chirps and Short Thoughts
- Speaking of low latency, this is an amazing demonstration of Open TeleVision enabling remote teleoperation of robotic limbs.
- This is an encouraging and timely development out of Silicon Valley to create GPS resiliency in the face of real-world interference. Their video shows its GPS working in a war zone where standard smartphone GPS is spoofed. This 2021 Viodi article points to the importance of resilient PNT (Positioning, Navigation, Timing).
The Korner – Community of Innovation
Thinking of the city as a corporation whereby the council serves as a board of directors, setting strategic direction, and ensuring its vision is implemented by city staff is the philosophy of the city of Chandler, Arizona. In the above interview, councilmember Mark Stewart indicates that a big part of its success is its focus on providing core services, such as water, roads, and parks. that is defined in its charter.
As a pioneering community for commercial autonomous vehicle service, the most remarkable thing is that, according to Stewart, residents don’t even notice the driverless vehicles anymore.
